The Mission

MicroTau's mission is to improve the efficiency of the global aviation fleet, saving US$8 billion in fuel and 40 million tonnes of CO2 every year. We need a Product Engineering Associate (Layout & Installation) to contribute to developing the layout design and installation processes of our riblet film on target aircraft platforms. You will report to the Senior Product Engineer (Layout & Installation).

What You Will Do

  • Contribute to the product engineering process for the riblet film layout on a target aircraft. This includes defining what the solution needs to look like, researching and experimenting, setting verification criteria, designing and evaluating layout options through simulation and engineering drawings, assessing cost, manufacturability, assembly, safety, and customer needs, and calculating the risk of the solution meeting requirements.

  • Contribute to the development of installation processes on a target aircraft. This includes defining the installation process by generating standard operating procedures, evaluating its performance against requirements, and providing feedback and suggestions to improve it.

  • Contribute to the successful execution of customer deliveries. This includes preparing documentation (traceability, conformance documents, installation procedures, support strategies) and post-delivery reviews and reflections (updating risk assessments, performance results, verification and validation criteria, and recommending changes to the development pathway.

What Success Looks Like

  • First Month: You will learn about MicroTau's riblet solution integration objectives for aircraft applications in the short, medium, and long term. You will learn more about the MicroTau team, our processes, and how we embody our values of lift over drag, active transparency and changing the boundary conditions.

  • First Six Months: You will learn about recent riblet integration methods used in a US Air Force flight trial and gather feedback to highlight and suggest areas for improvement to inform upcoming developments. You will test riblet solution integration concepts and processes. You will communicate outcomes, such as risks, costs, and impacts of integration concepts.

  • First Year: You will document riblet integration procedures, considering riblet solution product support by developing processes such as product maintenance, cleaning, and replacement. You will also recommend future solution improvements and considerations.

About You

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, or equivalent).

  • Demonstrated experience with CAD modelling software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360 &c.)

  • Demonstrated Hands-on prototyping and testing experience.

  • Knowledge and a keen interest in commercial and military aircraft.

  • Experience with CFD software is desirable but not required (ANSYS, &c.)

Why You Should Join MicroTau

  • Impact: Aviation is one of the hardest to abate industries, and its share of global emissions is only growing. Join our mission to improve the efficiency of the global fleet and save millions of tonnes of CO2 every year.

  • Technology: Our technology leverages the drag-reducing properties of shark skin to make aircraft more efficient. You'll be exposed to expertise and developments in materials, photolithography, fluid dynamics, and scale manufacturing.

  • Team: Our team focuses on achieving our mission. We live our values of lift over drag, active transparency, and changing the boundary conditions, and we welcome new team members who want to do the same.

  • Corporate Jet: We have (most of) a corporate jet. It won't fly, but it sure does look cool.
